A hot (for coastal Michigan) day in mid-August, we put our initial deposit down for our new home. Four full months ago. And it is still Day Zero for us. Ground breaking is expected tomorrow. Then another eight months to our projected closing date. From start to finish, twelve full months to build a new home.
The first home we ever built (with Ryland Homes… now Lennar) took four months, from deposit to close. Times have changed. Our new place will be much more custom built, so architectural reviews and permits took extra time. But mostly, they blame Covid. Every delay, everywhere in the world… blame Covid.
Pictured is my daughter and her family’s new house. They will live just a few blocks from us. Same subdivision. Same builder. They signed up a week after we did, but Eastbrook Homes was able to push them a little forward as my son-in-law is defending our country overseas. We are all grateful Eastbrook was able to speed them up so he could be involved in the design process before deploying.
They are windowless right now… yep… Covid. So the builder wrapped the house completely and continues to work on the inside. Rough plumbing and electrical done.
And we wait for Day One. Should be tomorrow… and we will have a hole in the ground. Then it will become very real for us.
