Shilo was frolicking with the other dogs last evening, when a woman exclaimed, “We missed it!” Looking up at the sky, I saw that yes, we had missed it. A spectacular sunset best viewed from the beach. We’ve missed quite a few of these rare stunning sunsets lately. But that’s ok. When you live in western Michigan, given time, they will come again, and again.
Reminded me of a favorite quote from Captain Renault to Rick in Casablanca: “How extravagant you are, throwing away women like that. Someday they may be scarce.”
What is valuable but not scarce here along the Lake Michigan coast?
Pure unsalted water
Waves
Sand dunes
Beaches
Forests
Light houses
Boardwalks
Quaint stores
Artists
Great food
Good brews
Vineyards
Great fishing, and hunting
Beautiful weather, be it warm days, cool nights… or snow storms
Friendly people
Paved bike paths everywhere
Solitude when you want it
The time to enjoy it all
And yes… sunsets. Extravagant for us to miss such a dazzling one, but we can afford it. Here, we are swimming in riches.
