The allure of water in motion, calming the soul. Draws me to the beach daily, no matter the season. But as much as I love an immediate flow of relaxation, tranquility, wonder & awe from each trip to the beach, there are other things to experience. Donning a wetsuit and grabbing a board, just isn’t going to happen anytime soon. So maybe something less physically demanding, but still exciting? Zipping along an empty beach with a drone has been … fun!
Confidence continues to rise. I have ventured further out on the lake, up and down the beach, and have tentatively risen to a couple hundred feet in altitude.
Still, caution must be a constant companion. The wind here since I bought my DJI Mavic Mini never seems to stop. But it does slow down. Trouble being, it needs to slow down up in the air, not just at ground level. So many beginners ask incredulously, “It really wasn’t very windy, how did I lose my drone?”
The higher you go, the windier it gets. Sticking your head out the door, or looking at AccuWeather might indicate “go for it”. But then you look at wind by altitude. With my tiny drone, anything past 20 mph, even gusts, and I stay grounded.
Yesterday, I was able to fly, but had to stay under 100 feet. Too much wind higher up. Yet still, a different perspective. The State Park beach looks so narrow with the erosion and higher water levels. The naturally brown water of the Grand River contrasting the lake water.
Not the best photos staying low, and under heavily overcast skies, but still…. fun.
