I have always liked the sentiment of… “Don’t be afraid to spend while you are young. A hamburger tastes much better when you are 40 years old than when you are 80.” Today I saw an article with a Warren Buffett quote on the silliness of sacrificing your life to build the perfect resume. Many professionals belief it is prudent to “pay your dues”, take jobs that aren’t what you really want, but are a means to an end. An end that might not exist when .you get there.
“A few months ago I was talking to another MBA student, a very talented man, about 30 years old from a great school with a great resume. I asked him what he wanted to do for his career, and he replied that he wanted to go into a particular field, but thought he should work for McKinsey for a few years first to add to his resume. To me that’s like saving sex for your old age. It makes no sense.” -Warren Buffett
With a quick google search, I discovered he really liked the old age sex analogy:
“It’s nice to have a lot of money, but you know, you don’t want to keep it around forever. I prefer buying things. Otherwise, it’s a little like saving sex for your old age.”-Warren Buffett
And…
“You want to have a passion for what you are doing. You don’t want to wait until 80 to have sex.”-Warren Buffett
Good advice. At least it didn’t take me until 80 to realize it.
