I had a routine after every basketball practice and game in high school:
I would dash to the showers. Our home locker room had six shower heads, all would quickly be spewing steamy hot water. Then, when almost finished, I spun the shower to cold water only. In northwest Iowa, in the winter, cold water was stunningly frigid… and I would stand under the stream, blasting my head, face, embracing my body in the cold, for about 30 seconds.
Then, I would walk out of the shower, towel off and wait for the inevitable scream. Someone, always someone, would walk directly under the near freezing water. My teammates never learned. Well some may have learned. But there was always someone, who would fail to test the water and just walk right into it. Sadistic? Probably. But hey, it was good for them! Cold water is good. Surprise is good. And for those who think it isn’t… then learning to test the water is good.
I thought back to those times after hearing about the Grand Haven High School class that just did the below. I imagine they do it every year. When you are raised on the shores of Lake Michigan, you are taught to be hardy, fun-loving, with a touch of crazy.
Then, you can grow up to be this guy.
