“If you want a golden rule that will fit everything, this is it: Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” – William Morris
On the road to decluttering and simplifying our lives, we are parting with many useful and beautiful items. So useful must be defined strictly… it must be needed, make you life easier, make or save you money, and used almost daily. And beautiful must be inspirational, help make life more worth living.
Today, I realized that this rule can be extended to how we invest our free time. My wife has developed an extensive list of activities for us to experience when we get to Michigan. They all fit into two categories.
Beautiful… our nearest beach, many road trips to beaches up and down the Lake Michigan coast, all the events she has on her list.. kite flying competition, pole vaulting on the beach, sand castle championships, many festivals.
Useful… she intends for us to pick fresh whenever possible… strawberries, blueberries, cherries, apples, grapes; and visit farmers markets for produce we can’t pick. And to that, I add our salmon fishing trip… hopefully a freezer full.
