When we drove to Michigan on Wednesday, we noticed that in the Indiana construction zone hell, they had set up an express lane on the left. With the concrete barriers on both sides, only one chance to get on it… and one chance to get off… and it went on for many miles.
We didn’t take it, we were in no particular hurry. We made it thru the zone going about 45 mph, while the express lane cars zipped by at 60 mph or more.
Coming back from Michigan, we saw the express lane on the other side of the road. Lights-a-flashing, a tow truck was slowly backing up in the empty express lane. Uh oh!
A mile further down the road we saw why… a two car bash up. One car with a front end smashed was going nowhere. The other with side panel and wheel well damage was a maybe. The drivers looked ok.
Behind them, trapped in their express lane concrete barrier trench, was mile after mile after mile of cars who had obviously been there for a long time, and were going nowhere soon.
People out of their cars, pacing, gesturing angrily while cars flowed by them in both directions. So many miles, so many cars, so many people stuck in the fast lane.
Was it wrong of me to smile broadly as we drove on? Maybe not at the angry antics of those trapped in the express lane (that would be mean), but smiling with the knowledge that we would be no longer stuck in the fast lane of life.
