Just another normal day. Nothing special.
First an hour at our dog park, Shilo happily played with friends.
Later this morning we drove to the blueberry fields. Came away with five pounds of blue crop blueberries. With 24 or so varieties of blueberries grown in Michigan, we are nearing mid season… our favorite type yet to come. It is with those we shall freeze and stock our freezer for the winter. Meanwhile, today’s berries replenished our “eat by the handful” supply.
Then we continued down the road to a farm market. One we had not yet visited. Acquired a fantastic cantaloupe, ripe tomatoes, sweet corn and zucchini. This market has meat from a neighboring farm, so we picked up some brats too. Our one year old dog loves these trips, so much to see, so much to smell.
Giving Shilo a much desired rest in her kennel, we drove puppy-less up to a late lunch at another favorite restaurant… Dockers Fish House. Lobster fondue has become our go-to appetizer. It is just that amazing. I had followed up with bang-bang shrimp tacos the last three visits in a row. They were calling my name again. Loudly. But I decided I needed a change. Went with the waitress recommended spicy fish sandwich. It was a good change of pace. But on our next visit, it will be hard to resist the bang-bang shrimp.
As we left the restaurant we wondered if any sailboats would be out on the lake. But the winds were strong and from the north. No sailboats, but plenty of kite surfers. Wearing wetsuits. The water temperature had been 80 degrees only a week ago. Today “the lake flipped”. Up came the cold water. Water temps in the high 40’s. Lake Michigan never ceases to amaze.
Then my wife caught sight of a ship coming in… fast. The Lake Express ferry that travels back and forth between Muskegon and Milwaukee multiple times a day. Making the 90 mile trip in about 2.5 hours. We had wondered if the ferry was still active with Covid. Yes, it definitely is. As is the SS Badger out of Ludington, making a much slower daily trip to Manitowoc, Wisconsin.
Another two hours at the dog park. Shilo playing with friends. Me talking with the dog’s owners. During a lull in playmates, Shilo decided to dig a hole. I let her dig. Easy to cover back up when we left.
The day topped off with a sunset and watching the Royals lose again on TV. Nice to have baseball back.
Last week I produced 30 pages of a non-fiction book I am also writing. This week, “nothing special” may rule.
Another “nothing special” day from the shores of Lake Michigan that somehow always ends up… special. Hope your day was too!
