We headed east on Friday. A seven hour round trip to pick up Shilo, our new female golden retriever. Almost to the shore of Lake Huron, there was a lighthouse nearby. But this trip was single focused on the new puppy. The lighthouse would wait.
Our breeder, Robertson’s Retrievers came highly recommended. Three of our new dog’s “cousins” live with our neighbors. We had the pick of the new litter. Tough decision, all the puppies were extremely social, beautiful and engaging. My wife was able to eliminate one puppy who was determined to bite her toes as she held others. Word to the wise… don’t wear flip-flops when evaluating a litter of puppies. She ended up falling in love with this one. So worth the trip!
Now comes the few weeks of interrupted sleep. On the first night, my wife was up every hour, taking the dog outside. By last night, two hours of sleep, then three hours of sleep sandwiched between dead of the night trips to the grass by the pond.
Decades of dog ownership, we never remember the difficulties of the new puppy period. Still so worth it.
