Today we hopped into the car and drove south, south to the other haven… South Haven, Michigan. A former co-worker raved to me about this favorite vacation spot. Thirty-nine years ago we first drove by the South Haven exit. And ever since… we have never stopped. Always focused on going further north.
I’ve subconsciously had this belief that the closer you get to Chicago, or Detroit, the less cool (and safe) Michigan becomes. Today, we went south.
We were pleasantly surprised. The small downtown, tho jam packed with cars on a Friday morning, seems idyllic. Two beaches, a short walk from town, were beautiful. The Black River, separates the North and South Beaches. Walkways along the river and piers are well maintained. Ice cream and hot dog stands right on the beach, with plenty of picnic tables and benches to sit, relax, eat, and watch the world go by in slow motion.
The South Haven Light is, well… less grand than Grand Haven’s light and fog house. The light is a shorter version of Muskegon’s. But still a captivating view and vibe. South Haven will call us back soon. For a sunset. The catwalk lights should be stunning. To explore North Beach. Catch a ride on one of the cruises. Eat at one of the interesting restaurants… after the tourists have left. And to pick apples at one of the nearby orchards.
But today was all about soaking in the weather and views. A north breeze with 70 degree air temperatures and 75 degree water. Yet another paradise in Michigan.
