There are two types of people in the world… powerboat people and sailboat people. No, make that three kinds of people… there are also those who never even get on the water. They are much too “busy” to relax. This third group is so goal obsessed, they cannot imagine being on the water. Work, work work… and no play. I once went several years without taking a full week of vacation. Not the way I wanted to live. But I did, for far too long.
Powerboat people take the time to relax.. with purpose. With control. Powering from one accomplishment to another. Even when relaxing. A week away is productive and purposeful. They relax to recharge. Powering from one destination to another. Accomplishing… catching those fish. Powering to those special places. All while still answering emails. Checking in. Goals always in view. Goals always reached.
I loved to sail as a kid. My little sunfish, wandering back and forth on smallish lakes. Aiming for a point on the distant shore. And then, when getting near, that shore goal disappeared as I turned, aiming for a new point. Taking what the wind allowed me. A partnership with nature. Power shared. Back and forth across the lake.
The old saying… those with powerboats live for the destination, while those with sailboats live for the journey. A little too harsh for the powerboaters. They are after all, on the water too.
Just… sometimes… sail.
