An east current is evil in The Lord of the Rings. The east wind is summoned by Moses to bring a plague of locusts to Egypt. Charles Dickens used it as a harbinger of unfortunate events. What does an east wind bring us? On the beaches of western Michigan… it brings… bugs!
We were lazily enjoying the North Beach again this morning, sunshine and blue waters. Then came the fog creeping in again with the air stirring ever so slightly from the west. Almost imperceptibly, a slight eastern wind battled back against the fog.
The dreaded easterly is predicted to blow off and on tomorrow. Beware the eastern wind, oh thee 4th of July tourists.
Thankfully, an eastern wind is unusual. The prevailing westerlies keep our beaches insect free most of the summer. I wonder if across the lake, those poor souls in Wisconsin delight in the scarce eastern flow? Will it push the nasties from their shore back into the woods? We Michiganders get the warmer water (over 70 degrees now!), the huge dunes, the normally bug free beaches… it is only fair they get some respite today and tomorrow… while for a few moments, we suffer in paradise.
