Our first lighthouse visit on our trip was the Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse, completed in 1892 and guarding the dangerous turning point for ships entering the Straits of Mackinac. This is where Lake Michigan and Lake Huron come together, tho technically it is all one lake with a narrows here. Rocky shoals, high ship traffic and storms that develop quickly and magnify in the straits have led to many large shipwrecks.
On the northern point of Mackinaw City, this one was an easy visit… less than a mile from our hotel. Also right next to the Mackinac Bridge. A must stop when venturing to the Upper Peninsula, both for the view of the bridge, and a quiet peaceful expanse around the lighthouse.
Just across the street is theĀ Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association and store. I purchased a large coffee table type book for $59. Such a beautiful book with amazing aerial photos, I couldn’t resist. Later, I searched Amazon expecting I might have overpaid. Instead, I found it listed for $153. So I actually got a deal in a tourist town!
