Do you believe in magic?
“And it’s magic, if the music is groovy
It makes you feel happy like an old-time movie
I’ll tell you about the magic, and it’ll free your soul
But it’s like trying to tell a stranger ’bout rock and roll”
When that song was written 50+ years ago, John Sebastian sharply veered away from blues and folk music, transforming to rock and roll. The existing fan base did not understand and many were not happy. This was back in the days when Bob Dylan was booed onstage because he traitorously picked up an electric guitar.
This song was joyously displaying the magic of the music, realizing that just “tell(ing) a stranger ’bout rock and roll” wouldn’t be effective.
Yesterday, my wife and I were sitting at our favorite brewhouse when a couple from Kansas City began talking to us (my wife was wearing a Royals shirt). They were on vacation, making their way all the way up the Lake Michigan coast. As they talked about the beach communities experienced so far, they raved about Grand Haven. We nodded and smiled, but knew they were only seeing a small part of what makes this community so special.
Living here… is magic… words and accolades can’t fully convey it.
