As previously mentioned, we will be creating a separate page for “Pat’s Picks”. Yesterday, was the 1st teaser of picks, with a 1-1 record.
Here is Pat’s picks for March 4th, with detailed commentary:
Lipscomb VS. Florida Gulf Coast:
Lipscomb is a heavy underdog (+8) going into the conference championship game today. The Bison are led by a savvy shooting guard in Garrison Matthews, as well as a gritty forward in Rob Marberry. This classic inside outside approach has caused FGCU problems in the past. In the two previous meetings this year, the Bison have jumped out to big leads. They blew the first lead at home, losing 88-83, while holding on to a huge road win in the second matchup, winning 90-87. This game will be a fast paced game that will come down to whose legs can hold out the longest. Take Lipscomb and the points.
FGCU wins 79-77
Michigan VS. Purdue:
This game will be one of the best games you will see all year. Michigan is a team that just flat-out matches up well with Purdue. This is the Wolverines best defensive team in Coach Beilein’s tenure. Moe Wagner is able to pull Haas/ Haarms away from the rim with his three-point range. Expect to see a Michigan offense predicated off of ball screens today. Purdue will switch all screens in an effort to eliminate any pick and pop options. This will also force Wagner to get to the post and score down low. However, Purdue has beaten Michigan twice for a multitude of reasons. Michigan does not have a defensive post presence that can even contain Haas. If Michigan looks to double on Haas, the array of shooters that the Boilermakers have will be ready to take and make open looks. Expect to see Michigan play straight up on Haas early. If Michigan starts to struggle on the offensive end, I can see where they might roll the dice and double on Haas or switch to a zone. This game will come down to the last-minute, and I will take the proven free throw shooters in Purdue, over the inconsistent shooters on Michigan.
