Ice Storm Cometh
A little Iowa style ice storm had everyone scurrying home as the building was shut down today. By the time I was able to leave, it was getting bad… but not too bad… I have seen much worse.
My first serious ice storm was back when I was a high school junior. It was February, a few days before our first basketball playoff game. Seventeen inches of snow fell, with wind… a true blizzard. The unusual thing about this blizzard, was it was followed by freezing rain that covered everything in a half-inch or more of ice. Everything, including the huge drifts that covered all the roads. Snow plows couldn’t break through the ice-covered drifts. Heavy equipment had to bust thru them, one by one.
The National Guard was activated. Helicopters dropped food to stranded farmers outside of town… and they picked up two of my teammates.. so we could practice for our playoff game.
That was a real ice storm… but not my worst.
